3 Years After Pep Boys Demolition Exhibit, Green Villain Hosts Block Party

Press Release: Green Villain Hosts Block Party at Hudson Exchange West

Three Years Following Pep Boys Demolition Art and Community Are Still Growing Strong

July 2, 2018 Jersey City’s Green Villain is bringing back the funk with a block party featuring live painting, music, vendors and local food trucks this July 21 (rain date, July 22). Following up on their 2016 “twelve hour” art and music festival they are partnering with VYV Apartments and Writer’s Bench to give something back to the community. Join them at the site of the former Pep Boys/Demolition Exhibition and relive the glory of three years ago.

Green Villain was born inside the historic Clorox Bleach factory in 2009 and, working with, local and regional artists started producing murals around the city in 2013. In late 2014 they first painted the rear of Pep Boys in Metro Plaza right across from Shop Rite. The site was acquired by Forest City and G&S Investors early in 2015 and they contacted Green Villain about the mural project underway. That led to the Demolition Exhibition in the summer 2015. The party lasted a week, 100 artists painted 30,000 square feet of murals on the inside and outside walls of the building. Thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life took it in–looking at the art, chatting,
skating, taking flicks, having a blast.

And then the building was demolished to make way for the VYV Apartments, the first building in Forest City’s twenty year project on the 18 acre site. In 2017 Forest City called on Green Villain to curate a sculpture for an outdoor deck on the seventh floor of their first building. Totem II by Irish-born Maximilian Pelczmann was airlifted to the deck in early winter.

Now Green Villain and Writer’s Bench are doing it in 2018 with the newest installment of community placemaking: a local block party for the community of Jersey City. Fifteen artists will each paint an 8’ by 25’ mural on Saturday, July 21 (rain date, Sunday, July 22). DJs from the Open Crates vinyl collective as well as the extended GV network will start at noon and continue until 6 PM. IncrediBalls Food Truck, Park & Munch and Luigi’s Ice Cream will keep hunger pangs at bay. This event is not to be missed.
