If you have traveled around downtown Jersey City or entered Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel, you more then likely have seen the 200ft by 80ft mural found at 580 Marin Blvd. This massive mural, which depicts Jersey City as a city of gateways, was created by artist DISTORT. Known across Jersey City for his unique art that combines “classical training” with graffiti, DISTORT displays his art through painting and even sculptures. DISTORT obtained a Bachelor’s of the Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and also attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. One art piece DISTORT is known for are his scrolls, which premiered in Philadelphia at the Works on Paper Gallery. DISTORT uses the inside of aerosol spray cans or smaller fire extinguishers to uniquely display his art in a creative yet still effective way.
While locally based, DISTORT has had murals all around the United States. These locations range from Miami to the other side of the country in Los Angeles. He has even participated in painting murals overseas in cities such as Istanbul. With the continued widespread growth of murals across the city, especially with the ongoing Mural Arts Program by Jersey City, we will most certainly see more from DISTORT in the future.
“Similar to the time of the European Renaissance, we live in an age where wealth and prosperity are syphoned from areas of the globe and consolidated in others, leaving behind great despair. For those of us fortunate enough to live in a relatively safe and stable environment, the prevalence of violence and chaos in the world surrounding us can induce a constant stress. To know that your comfort is at the expense of people elsewhere (and even the planet itself) indicates that your position is unsustainable and likely to be threatened by what the future may bring.”DISTORT
Come visit DISTORT’s latest exhibit at Downtown234’s opening reception, tonight at 6pm. Downtown234 is Jersey City’s newest art gallery located in 234 York Street.
